Things to do in Darlington for Chinese New Year

A series of free activities are planned across Darlington town centre to see in the Chinese New Year on Saturday 10 February. From performing arts, to arts and crafts there's loads on offer for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Celebrations begin at Crown Street Library at 10am, where children are invited to listen to Chinese legends and stories and can take part in New Year inspired Lego challenges. Arts and craft activities will then be available in Newcastle Building Society community space between 11am and 3pm. A series of free introductory Chinese dance workshops will also be running at the Dolphin Centre throughout the day. These sessions are suitable for children aged between 5 and 11 and are bookable online via Eventbrite by searching events in Darlington and ‘Chinese dance workshop’.

Visitors to Darlington can also enjoy performances from traditional Chinese lion dancers who will be visiting town centre businesses throughout the day to bring them good fortune for the year ahead. Performances and activities will also be available outside Sing Tea on Blackwellgate, and visitors are encouraged to enter their instore competition to win a hamper of prizes.

People looking to grab a bite to eat, can also enjoy a special New Year inspired menu at popular Asian restaurant, Bambudda, on Gladstone Street.

"Chinese New Year is a time to embrace traditions, enjoy delicious food, and wish for prosperity and happiness. We're delighted to have so much going on in the town centre for people to enjoy and to celebrate the different cultures and traditions of our residents.

"Darlington is a safe and welcoming place for people of all ages, cultures and lifestyles and this is one of many events which help to strengthen and bond our local community. It also encourages people into the town centre to make the most of our fantastic retail, hospitality and leisure offerings, supporting independent businesses and the wider local economy."
