Thursday 23rd November - Carers Rights Day events

There are a number of great events locally and across the region to celebrate Carers Rights Day.

The following information is an update from NHS North East & Yorkshire.

South Tyneside

Information event taking place at South Tyneside Adult Carers Service – this is the news article https://southtyneside.gov.uk/article/20533/Caring-for-the-Carers

South Tyneside Council has just achieved Level One Active Carer Confident Award which we will be promoting on Carers Rights Day (The Carer Confident benchmarking scheme assists employers to build a supportive and inclusive workplace for staff who are, or will become, carers and to make the most of the talents that carers can bring to the workplace. Carer Confident also seeks to recognise employers who achieve this, and to inspire others to follow suit. The certificate of achievement is presented to employers who have demonstrated that they have built an inclusive workplace where carers are recognised, respected and supported). https://www.employersforcarers.org/carer-confident/

During October/November we have launched the new Young Carers ID card in South Tyneside - We have listened to young carers and co-produced their very own ID card which will help identify and support young carers in education and healthcare settings. The purpose of the card is to:

Help raise awareness of young carer’s responsibilities and give formal recognition to their role.

Discreetly let people know about their caring responsibilities without having to repeatedly share personal details.

Give the Young Carer confidence to ask for help or understanding from professionals.

Prompt discussions between staff and the Young Carer to understand their needs and make reasonable adjustments to support them

Along with the card there are information booklets and posters for Education staff, healthcare professionals and young carers. All the resources have a weblink and a QR code to this address www.southtyneside.gov.uk/youngcarers where you can find out more information and online access to the resources.

Humankind South Tyneside Young Carers Service is responsible for issuing the Young Carer ID card, if you have any queries about the card, their service or a young person who you think may be a young carer, please get in touch with them directly.

Humankind South Tyneside Young Carers Service - We are a national charity, and our aim is to identify all Young Carers, of all abilities, aged between 5 and 24 years old within South Tyneside. Our role is to provide support and guidance to those who may need our help, to reduce the impact of their caring responsibilities.

Young Carers are inspirational individuals and perform a variety of different roles to support parents, carers, siblings, and other family members daily. These roles could include (but not limited to) additional housework, supporting siblings, providing emotional care, and interpreting for their loved ones. Their reason for caring may be to support someone with disabilities, chronic illnesses, mental health difficulties or other conditions.

We can help with:

  • support to identify future goals and aspirations
  • advocacy (speaking on your behalf)
  • information, advice, and guidance
  • activities to give you a break from your caring role
  • meeting people in a similar situation as you
  • support to access other services

‘We feel really lucky and blessed to be involved with a group of people who really care about their work, and their young carers. My children used to feel like being a young carer was a burden on them, but now they feel special and proud of their abilities because of the efforts made by the South Tyneside Young Carers service.’’

If your caring responsibilities are having an impact on you, the Young Carers Service will work with you and your family to find the right support for you. Parents, carers and children can self-refer to our service through completing the referral form or by speaking to your child’s school.

County Durham

We find that covering a huge County we need to stretch Carers Rights Day to the whole week. With that in mind we are holding 5 information events in Stanley, Durham City, Easington, Spennymoor and Bishop Auckland. See the link to our website for more information https://dccarers.org/all-events/carers-right-day-event/1700476200/   These will include stands from many of our partner VCS agencies as well as ourselves offering benefits advice, cost of living support, keeping warm packs and lots more. We are also being supported by the NHS Melissa Bus travelling to Barnard Castle and Consett on Tuesday 21st November offering similar information and advice. See the link to our website here https://dccarers.org/all-events/carers-rights-day-nhs-melissa-bus/1700524800/

In Darlington we have teamed up with Darlington Connect in the town centre and have a similar information event with other local charities on Wednesday 22nd November https://dccarers.org/all-events/money-matters-darlington-carers-right-day-event/

Another very exciting project has just launched in County Durham. We are being funded by Durham County Council to support Carers around hospital discharge. We now have two full time posts working within University Hospital of North Durham. They are working with staff teams to identify and offer intensive support to Carers before, during and after discharge. The project is in the early stages but has already made some good links with health and social care discharge teams and is working with the patient experience team. We are also in discussion with Newcastle University who are interested in supporting us to evaluate the project.

Carers Rights Day is about giving carers the information and assistance to confidently ask for what they need and take action when their rights are being overlooked.

Grab the opportunity to find out more about your rights as a carer and come to North Shields Library or the Oxford Centre on Thursday 23rd of November. There will be Carer drop-ins so you can ask questions about your caring role, a buffet lunch for everyone who attends and free winter gifts to help you through the cold months. Best of all, come along and hear Steve Cashburn give his vital information session on Grants, Discounts and Entitlements for Carers.

Northumberland

Carers Rights Day empowers carers with information and support. It helps them to feel confident asking for what they need and to challenge things when their rights are not being met. Displaying your poster helps raise awareness of carers rights, but it also lets carers know that they can trust you to understand their needs and where they can find support.

We will be hosting a free event that carers and their supporters can attend.

Join us for a coffee and a catch up to find out more about carers rights and how to access support at two events on Carers Rights Day:

Thursday 23rd November - 10am - 12pm The Manors, Adderlane Road, Prudhoe, NE42 5ET

Thursday 23rd November - 2pm - 4pm Haltwhistle Library, Mechanics Institute, Westgate Haltwhistle, NE49 0AX

We will also be hosting a workshop to help empower carers and support them in understanding what rights they have:

Our online session will be held on Wednesday 22nd November 11am via Zoom
