Regeneration works on Victoria Road begin
The following is a news release from Darlington Borough Council.
Over half a million pounds is being invested into the project from the Towns Fund, which aims to deliver long term economic and productivity growth and is part of the government’s plan for levelling up the UK economy. The project seeks to create a coherent streetscape which capitalises on the town’s rail heritage, breathing new life into the area and offering a safe and attractive thoroughfare between Bank Top train station and the town centre.
The works will encompass both residential and business properties and will focus on external improvements, including the installation of solid timber doors, entrance tiling and railings. Businesses will also benefit from updated shop fronts and hand painted signage inspired by the town’s rail history. New seating and planting will also be installed along the street to create a sense of arrival for people entering the town from the west station exit.
The ambitious plans, which focus on properties towards the station at the Eastern end of Victoria Road, support significant regeneration of the wider railway station area which has deteriorated over many years.
So far over half of property owners in the area have signed up for support. Engagement with local residents and business owners is ongoing and anyone interested in getting involved with the scheme is encouraged to contact Darlington Borough Council.
Angela Howey, Towns Fund chair, said:
“We are delighted that this exciting project is starting and are confident that the changes being made will significantly improve the environment and the initial perceptions of people coming to Darlington, building on the town’s unique rail heritage. This is one of nine projects supported by the Towns Fund which seeks to drive the sustainable economic regeneration of towns and deliver long term economic growth.”
Chris McEwan, Cabinet member for economy said:
“We are committed to making sure Darlington has a strong economic and sustainable future which builds on its sense of place. The Victoria Road project will offer an attractive thoroughfare for residents, businesses and visitors, and will present an exciting opportunity for new and established businesses in the area.”
