Darlington Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre

Due to some of the Covid 19 restrictions being lifted, Darlington Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre is now able to offer their client's face to face appointments - either in their homes or in Covid secure spaces.

They have several options in different areas around the town. This now replaces the telephone-only service that they had to offer during the height of the pandemic. It is very helpful to be able to meet with clients in person, especially as many feel isolated and alone due to their financial situation. To be able to look them in the eye, to offer hope and reassurance that they can help, is a great blessing!

The Darlington Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre supports those with a DL1- DL5 postcode and offer free debt support and advice to anyone regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation etc. Clients become aware of our service through a variety of channels - so far these have included Social prescribers, Social Services, Schools, Foodbanks, Mental Health practitioners, the DWP, local councillors etc. Clients then call their head office on the Freephone number 0800 328 006, where they make an appointment with the local debt coach - Rachel Ryan. They meet to discuss their debts, their income and their expenditure. From the information gathered, their team at Head Office, who are accredited by the Financial Conduct Authority, devise the most appropriate way for the client to deal with their debts (whether that is through a Debt Repayment Plan, Debt Relief Order, IVA etc) and they produce a sustainable budget for the client, to help them maintain a lifestyle free of debt.

Their help does not stop there - they support clients until they are debt free and beyond, encouraging them to cultivate good financial management skills. They are offered the services of a volunteer befriender who will get to know them and their family, offering encouragement, a listening ear and practical support when needed. They find their help particularly suitable for those often on the margins, without good family support, perhaps suffering from anxiety and depression.
