Diabetes UK update
Diabetes and My Family – North of England Competition
Diabetes UK would like to invite children and young people affected by diabetes from across the North of England to enter their family competition. The competition, which runs until 31st May, encourages young people living with or touched by diabetes to express what the condition means to them and their families. Whether it’s through a picture, poem, song or sculpture they want to hear from you. Diabetes is relentless and they want to encourage children and young people to use their voice and share how diabetes affects you and your family.
There are several categories with the chance to win one of four luxury family hampers:
- Children with diabetes aged 0-5 years
- Children with diabetes aged 6-12 years
- Children with diabetes aged 13+
- Children and young people aged under 18 with a close family member who is living with diabetes
So, if you’re feeling creative and want to help them raise awareness of diabetes then get involved- they’d love to hear from you!

Could you be a ‘Critical Friend’ for Diabetes UK’s Northern Team?
Diabetes UK North of England are recruiting new volunteers! Their ‘Critical Friend’ volunteers will form a diverse panel, who can feed back on Diabetes UK resources, materials and projects and offer lived experience to help shape their future work. Their panel will mostly volunteer from home in their own time but will meet occasionally via online platforms or face-to-face (when able to do so), so they are looking for volunteers who are able to work independently and as part of a team.
If you are based in the North of England and interested in this role please click here to visit their website and apply.

Your chance to have your say about the National Diabetes Audit (NDA)
If you are an adult with any type of diabetes or if you are at risk of type 2 diabetes then Diabetes UK want to hear from you! They would really value your thoughts and feedback on what the NDA should look at and deliver in the future. Your answers to these questions will guide them in improving the NDA and help to ensure that the NDA covers the aspects of care most important to people with and at risk of diabetes.
There are two ways you can get involved. You can join their Focus groups which will be held virtually and will be an opportunity to have a more open discussion to learn about the NDA and for you to tell them about the areas of diabetes care that are most important to you.
These will be two hour sessions held virtually on the following dates:
Monday 7th June (afternoon) and Thursday 17th June (morning).
If you are interested in participating in the focus groups, please contact kim.rezel@hqip.org.uk for further information.
Or you can complete their survey which will take about 30 minutes to complete.

Teenage and type 1 diabetes online Q&A session
Life with type 1 diabetes isn’t always easy. But sometimes it can help to hear the experiences of other people who know exactly what it’s like. Join Diabetes UK for their ‘Teenage and type 1’ online Q&A session on Monday 17 May 7pm-7.45pm, to hear from their panel of 15–21-year-olds living with type 1. They’ll share their personal experiences and answer your questions about the (emotional and practical) highs and lows. They’ll have their camera and mics on, but you won’t – so you can sit back, take it all in, and submit your questions through the Q&A button.
Please note: this session is aimed at 13–17-year-olds in the UK living with type 1.
